Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies

With an international, cross-cultural environment where both local and outstanding international students from over 50 different countries can inspire one another, the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies(GSAPS) has become the country’s premier post-graduate institute, earning a high degree of recognition from both national and international communities.

Founded in April 1998, GSAPS is the first independent graduate school of WASEDA University, which constitutes itself without an undergraduate school. The year of 2008 marked the 10th anniversary of the establishment of GSAPS. In the span of 13 years, GSAPS has produced 1,373 MA graduates, who hailed not only from neighboring Asian nations, but also from 53 different countries and regions around the world. These graduates are now flourishing in diverse fields, covering journalism, international cooperation and development aid, international organizations/diplomatic missions, research and international businesses. In addition to cultural and regional diversity, our current student population consists of a broad range of ages.

Our fundamental principles in delivering effective education are to conduct extensive, interdisciplinary research in the fields of history, politics, economics, industry, business management, society, culture and international issues from a global and regional viewpoint of the Asia-Pacific region, and to cultivate talented professionals with a high-level of expertise and skills, who can contribute the results of our research to the development and well-being of society.

With a diverse student population originating from the Asia-Pacific region to other parts of the world, GSAPS offers a multicultural educational environment where people of different nationalities and ethnicities all blend together. Our students are privileged to embark on their academic endeavors with our highly specialized faculty members and the many instructors who are experienced in the fields of international civil service, diplomacy and mass media.
