
In February 1989, Seoul National University established the Center for Area Studies to foster academic research of global regions and to respond to the increasing demand for a truly global perspective in Korea. In March 1992, the President of the Republic of Korea appointed the Center of Area Studies to be one of a select few national research institutes to specialize in this endeavor. From that time forward, the scope of Center activities expanded beyond the traditional boundaries of Seoul National University, reaching a high level of interaction with area specialists nationwide. Throughout the entire period of its existence, the Center has been a force for promoting area studies in Korea.
The expansion of international and area studies in Korea and the endeavors by Seoul National University to meet these requirements gave rise to the optimal opportunity to capitalize on this convergence of needs and ability.
