Degree Requirements

Master in Public Affairs (MPA) - 2 years

  • 16 courses (or 12 courses for those in joint-degree programs)
  • Core curriculum
  • A graduate policy workshop
  • Internship
  • M.P.A. Qualifying Examination

Master in Public Policy (M.P.P) - 1 year

  • Complete eight courses
  • Intensive six-week week summer program in economics, statistics, and policy analysis

Doctor of Philosophy in Public Affairs (Ph.D.) - 4 years, residential

  • 10-12 required courses, 85 average, reading proficiency in at least one foreign language,an original research paper of publishable quality before general exams, 2 or 3 written general exams,one post-generals teaching assignment, a dissertation, a final public oral examination

  • 4 Fields of Concentration: International Relations; Development Studies; Domestic Policy; and Economics and Public Policy

  • 5 Certificate programs: Demography (from Princeton's Office of Population Research); Health and Health Policy (in conjunction with the Center for Health & Wellbeing); Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy; Urban Policy and Urban Police and Planning

    Joint Degrees

  • J.D. with N.Y.U., Columbia and Stanford law schools; others on an individual case-by-case basis

  • M.B.A. with certain schools on an individual case-by-case basis

  • S.T.E.P. - students may also earn a certificate in Science, Technology and Environmental Policy

  • Students may also earn a Certificate in Demography from Princeton's Office of Population Research

    Core Courses

  • Core Curriculum: Microeconomics Analysis (basic or advanced); Macroeconomics Analysis (basic or advanced); Quantitative Analysis (basic or advanced); The Politics of Public Policy;; Psychology for Policy Analysis and Implementation; and a Graduate Policy Workshop
