Overview

The Master of International Studies(MIS) at North Carolina State University is designed to address the growing complexities of the international system. The MIS is a professional masters degree program that prepares students for exciting careers in government service, international institutions, and non-governmental organizations.

Students in the program develop a broad-based knowledge and competency in the core sub-fields of international studies, as well as an in-depth understanding of an individualized specialization of interest to them. Each student is able to design his or her own unique specialization with the assistance of faculty advisors.

The School has a curriculum and faculty that spans numerous departments and several colleges across the University. This multidisciplinary approach strengthens the program and enhances student preparation for their individual fields of study.

Degree Requirements

Master of International Studies:(MIS):

  • The MIS is a 36 credit hour, non-thesis degree program that is multi-disciplinary in its requirements.
  • 20 credit hours must be completed at the 500 course level or higher
  • 15 credit hours must be completed from the core course selections
  • Students nearing completion of the program are brought together in a capstone seminar in which they explore broader issues in international studies and write a capstone paper that is presented to other students and faculty.
  • Competency in a foreign language is required and is certified by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature.
  • American students must have a significant foreign study or work experience of at least 12 weeks. This may be prior experience or one that is undertaken while enrolled in the MIS program. International students fulfill this requirement by living and studying in the United States while pursuing the program.

Fields of Specialization

An individualized specialization of 12-15 hours is also required. The specialization may be:

  • In a geographical region (e.g., Latin America, South Asia)

  • An international topic (e.g., security, environment, sustainable development)

  • Professional field (e.g., business, public administration, non-profit management)

  • A technical specialty (e.g., agriculture, information technology).

    Core Courses

    The program requires completion of a core curriculum of 15 credit hours or 5 courses. Five core fields are represented:

  • International Relations
  • Comparative Politics/Societies
  • International Law and Organization
  • International Economy/Development
  • Cross-Cultural Communication

    Students must complete one course (3 credit hours) from each of the five fields listed below:
