Overview

The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies is a new Institute generated by the fusion of the Graduate Institute of International Studies (HEI) and the Graduate Institute of Development Studies (IUED). The Graduate Institute owes its reputation to the quality of its cosmopolitan faculty, the strength of its core disciplines (economics, history, law, political science, development), its policy-relevant approach to international affairs and development, and its bilingual English-French education. Located in the heart of international Geneva, next to many international organization, NGO's, diplomatic missions and multinational firms, it represents a unique interface between the theory and practice of international relations.

Degree Requirements

Master in International Affairs:(MIA):2 years

  • Interdisciplinary program with a choice of concentration on Global and regional integration, Security and Conflict Management or Global Society. 120 ECTS credits, including a master's thesis.

Master in International Studies:(MIS):2 years

  • Specialization in International Economics, International History and Politics, International Law or Political Science. 120 ECTS credits, including a master's thesis

Ph.D. in International Studies:4 years

  • Specialization in International Economics, International History and Politics, International Law or Political Science.

Master in Development Studies:(MDEV):2 years

  • Specialization in Global Ecology and Sustainable Development, International Cooperation, Conflicts and Peacebuilding, or Human development, Poverty and Inequality.

PhD in Development Studies:10 semesters

  • Specialization in Global Ecology and Sustainable Development, International Cooperation, Conflicts and Peacebuilding, or Human development, Poverty and Inequality.

    Global South Scholar-In-Residence Programme

    This programme aims at developing an intellectual exchange between academics from Africa, Asia and Latin America and the Graduate Institute's faculty. Three candidates per semester will be selected to spend one semester at the Institute in order to take advantage of the programme to update their teaching curricula, participate in teaching courses, further their research projects and contribute to enriching the intellectual life of the Institute.
